Our History
The Wanaka Rotary Club sponsored a meeting on 20 October 1999, attended by approximately 35 residents from the Wanaka area, to establish a SeniorNet in Wanaka. SeniorNet Wanaka became an Incorporated Society on 27 October 1999 and received tax-exempt charitable status on 22 November 1999.
Telecom NZ Ltd offered a $1500 sponsorship, along with two no-charge telephone lines and a subscription to Xtra free of charge once SeniorNet Wanaka had its own rooms and computers. In the interim, Mount Aspiring College provided access to their computer suite after school finished on Friday.
In its first 6 months SeniorNet Wanaka grew to 60 financial members, of whom 40 had started or completed a series of Word Processing classes. The tutors were members who used manuals provided by SeniorNet Wellington and paid for by the Wanaka Rotary Club.
