Stay safe from online fraud and scams: a for free presentation for all seniors in the Wānaka community.
Thursday 7th August. 10.00 a.m. to 12 noon. Wānaka Presbyterian Church, Tenby Street
Join us for an informative and practical session on how to protect yourself from online scams and fraud. Learn about the latest tactics used by scammers in New Zealand – including fake emails, phone calls, and online tricks – and how to spot the warning signs. We will also cover simple ways to stay safe online, how to make secure payments, and what to do if something doesn’t feel right.
The most dangerous scams of 2025 are powered by Artificial Intelligence, making them more adaptive, realistic, and scalable than ever before. Deepfakes, AI-generated communications, and rapid website cloning are now standard tools in the scammer’s arsenal. For example, scammers now use generative AI to craft highly realistic phishing emails and SMS messages (“smishing”). These messages mimic the tone, style, and even the writing quirks of real people or organisations, making them much more believable than traditional scams. Staying vigilant, verifying all requests for sensitive information, and using advanced security tools are crucial defences against these evolving threats.
This talk is especially tailored for seniors, with easy-to-understand advice and plenty of time for questions and individual support.
Everyone is welcome – bring your friends and stay one step ahead of the scammers!
